Add Integers: example 3.27

Translate and simplify: the sum of $8$ and $−12,$ increased by $3 .$

Work it out on paper first. Then open the solution one step at a time, and stop as soon as you can finish on your own.

Solution
The phrase increased by indicates addition.

The sum of $8$ and $−12$ , increased by $3$

Translate. $[8 + (−12)] + 3$

Simplify. $−4 + 3$

Add. $−1$
