Subtract Integers: example 3.41

Evaluate $x - 4 when$

ⓐ $x = 3$
ⓑ $x = −6 .$

Work it out on paper first. Then open the solution one step at a time, and stop as soon as you can finish on your own.

Solution
ⓐ To evaluate $x - 4$ when $x = 3$ , substitute $3$ for $x$ in the expression.

Subtract.

ⓑ To evaluate $x - 4$ when $x = −6,$ substitute $−6$ for $x$ in the expression.
