Power through a Branch of a Circuit

Each resistor in the circuit below is 30 $Ω$ . What power is dissipated by the middle branch of the circuit?

Strategy
The middle branch of the circuit contains resistors $R_{3} and R_{5}$ in series. The voltage across this branch is 12 V. We will first find the equivalent resistance in this branch, and then use $P = V^{2} / R$ to find the power dissipated in the branch.
Solution
The equivalent resistance is $R_{middle} = R_{3} + R_{5} = 30 Ω + 30 Ω = 60 Ω$ . The power dissipated by the middle branch of the circuit is

$P_{middle} = \frac{V^{2}}{R_{middle}} = \frac{{(12 V)}^{2}}{60 Ω} = 2.4 W.$
