Solve Equations with Fractions or Decimals: example 2.51

Solve: $−5 = \frac{1}{4} (8 x + 4)$ .

Work it out on paper first. Then open the solution one step at a time, and stop as soon as you can finish on your own.

Solution

Distribute.

Simplify.
Now there are no fractions.

Subtract 1 from both sides.

Simplify.

Divide by 2.

Simplify.

Check:

Let $x = −3$ .
