Solve Equations with Fraction or Decimal Coefficients: example 8.40

Solve: $1 = \frac{1}{2} (4 x + 2) .$

Work it out on paper first. Then open the solution one step at a time, and stop as soon as you can finish on your own.

Solution

Distribute.

Simplify. Now there are no fractions to clear!

Subtract 1 from both sides.

Simplify.

Divide by 2.

Simplify.

Check: Let $x = 0 .$
