Example 10.46 from Prealgebra, 10.4 Divide Monomials
Simplify:
Work it out on paper first. Then open the solution one step at a time, and stop as soon as you can finish on your own.
To simplify an expression with a quotient, we need to first compare the exponents in the numerator and denominator.
| ⓐ | |
| Since 15 > 10, there are more factors of in the denominator. | |
| Use the quotient property with | |
| Simplify. |
| ⓑ | |
| Since 5 > 3, there are more factors of 3 in the denominator. | |
| Use the quotient property with | |
| Simplify. | |
| Apply the exponent. |
Notice that when the larger exponent is in the denominator, we are left with factors in the denominator and in the numerator.
The book's Try It right after this example: same idea, new numbers. Only the answer is given.
