Example 4.20 from Statistics, 4.4 Geometric Distribution (Optional)
The lifetime risk of developing pancreatic cancer is about one in 78 (1.28 percent). Let X = the number of people you ask until one says he or she has pancreatic cancer. Then X is a discrete random variable with a geometric distribution: X ~ G or X ~ G(.0128).
Work it out on paper first. Then open the solution one step at a time, and stop as soon as you can finish on your own.
How did it go?
