Solve Quadratic Equations Using the Square Root Property: example 10.7

Solve: ${(x - 3)}^{2} = 16$ .

Work it out on paper first. Then open the solution one step at a time, and stop as soon as you can finish on your own.

Solution

${(x - 3)}^{2} = 16$

Use the Square Root Property. $x - 3 = \pm \sqrt{16}$

Simplify. $x - 3 = \pm 4$

Write as two equations. $x - 3 = 4, x - 3 = − 4$

Solve. $x = 7, x = − 1$
