Using the Addition Method When Multiplication of One Equation Is Required

Solve the given system of equations by the addition method.

\begin{array}{l} 3 x + 5 y = −11 \\ x - 2 y = 11 \end{array}

Solução
Adding these equations as presented will not eliminate a variable. However, we see that the first equation has $3 x$ in it and the second equation has $x .$ So if we multiply the second equation by $−3,$ the x-terms will add to zero.
$\begin{array}{l} x −2 y = 11 \\ −3 (x −2 y) = −3 (11) & Multiply both sides by −3. \\ −3 x + 6 y = −33 & Use the distributive property . \end{array}$
Now, let’s add them.

$\begin{array}{l} \underset{_______________}{\begin{array}{l} \begin{array}{l} 3 x + 5 y = −11 \\ −3 x + 6 y = −33 \end{array} \end{array}} \\ 11 y = −44 \\ y = −4 \end{array}$
For the last step, we substitute $y = −4$ into one of the original equations and solve for $x .$
$\begin{matrix} 3 x + 5 y = - 11 \\ 3 x + 5 (- 4) = - 11 \\ 3 x - 20 = - 11 \\ 3 x = 9 \\ x = 3 \end{matrix}$
Our solution is the ordered pair $(3, −4) .$ See Figure 6. Check the solution in the original second equation.
$\begin{array}{l} x - 2 y = 11 \\ (3) - 2 (- 4) = 3 + 8 \\ 11 = 11 & True \end{array}$
