Add and Subtract Mixed Numbers: example 4.84

Find the sum: $9 \frac{5}{9} + 5 \frac{7}{9} .$

Work it out on paper first. Then open the solution one step at a time, and stop as soon as you can finish on your own.

Solution

$9 \frac{5}{9} + 5 \frac{7}{9}$

Add the whole numbers and then add the fractions.
$8 \frac{7}{8} + 7 \frac{5}{8} .$

Rewrite $\frac{12}{9}$ as an improper fraction. $14 + 1 \frac{3}{9}$

Add. $15 \frac{3}{9}$

Simplify. $15 \frac{1}{3}$
