Solving Absolute Value Equations

Solve the following absolute value equations:

ⓐ $| 6 x + 4 | = 8$
ⓑ $| 3 x + 4 | = −9$
ⓒ $| 3 x - 5 | - 4 = 6$
ⓓ $| −5 x + 10 | = 0$

Solução
1. ⓐ
  $| 6 x + 4 | = 8$
  
  Write two equations and solve each:
  
  $\begin{matrix} 6 x + 4 & = & 8 & 6 x + 4 & = & −8 \\ 6 x & = & 4 & 6 x & = & −12 \\ x & = & \frac{2}{3} & x & = & −2 \end{matrix}$
  The two solutions are $\frac{2}{3}$ and $−2.$
2. ⓑ
  $| 3 x + 4 | = −9$
  There is no solution as an absolute value cannot be negative.
3. ⓒ
  $| 3 x - 5 | - 4 = 6$
  Isolate the absolute value expression and then write two equations.
  
  $\begin{matrix} | 3 x - 5 | - 4 & = & 6 \\ | 3 x - 5 | & = & 10 \\ 3 x - 5 & = & 10 & 3 x - 5 & = & −10 \\ 3 x & = & 15 & 3 x & = & −5 \\ x & = & 5 & x & = & - \frac{5}{3} \end{matrix}$
  
  There are two solutions: $5,$ and $- \frac{5}{3} .$
4. ⓓ
  (d) $| −5 x + 10 | = 0$
  The equation is set equal to zero, so we have to write only one equation.
  
  $\begin{matrix} −5 x + 10 & = & 0 \\ −5 x & = & −10 \\ x & = & 2 \end{matrix}$
  
  There is one solution: $2.$
