Example 10 from Algebra and Trigonometry, 3.5 Transformation of Functions
A function is given as Table 6. Create a table for the functions below.
| 2 | 4 | 6 | 8 | |
| 1 | 3 | 7 | 11 |
Work it out on paper first. Then open the solution one step at a time, and stop as soon as you can finish on your own.
For the negative sign outside the function indicates a vertical reflection, so the x-values stay the same and each output value will be the opposite of the original output value. See Table 7.
| 2 | 4 | 6 | 8 | |
| –1 | –3 | –7 | –11 |
For the negative sign inside the function indicates a horizontal reflection, so each input value will be the opposite of the original input value and the values stay the same as the values. See Table 8.
| −2 | −4 | −6 | −8 | |
| 1 | 3 | 7 | 11 |
The book's Try It right after this example: same idea, new numbers. Only the answer is given.
A function is given as Table 9. Create a table for the functions below.
| −2 | 0 | 2 | 4 | |
| 5 | 10 | 15 | 20 |
How did it go?
